Today at the Three Monkeys Pub in Manassas, with much thanks to John Wheeler from CCL and Great Prince William Climate Action Network who organized the event, we held our first ever Cranky Uncle vs. Climate Change book event. It was exciting stuff, as I didn’t know what to expect!
Standing under their “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” logo, I spoke about my research into fighting fake news and how I applied that research into writing and drawing the Cranky Uncle book. That was followed by a vigorous Q&A – the folk in Manassas are very engaged with the climate issue and many of the questions centered around how we could better engage the public and inspire more climate action.
The Q&A could have gone on much longer but eventually we had to transition to book signing. What really took me by surprise was the number of people buying multiple books (as many as five!) for family members. It turns out Cranky Uncle vs. Climate Change is the perfect book to give to friends and family – an entertaining and accessible introduction to the topic of climate change. Unfortunately, we didn’t quite bring enough books and a few people missed out on a book (one attendee said he’d come to the book launch in Arlington next Wednesday and I will definitely make sure he gets a copy second time around!)
One last thing. About a half dozen books into the book signing, on a whim, I drew a quick sketch of Cranky Uncle. This proved really popular and I ended up drawing cartoons in every book I signed for the rest of the day! (am feeling bad for those first handful of books now)
Special thanks again to John Wheeler, CCL and Great Prince William Climate Action Network, who organized and sponsored the event.
