The Science of the Cranky Uncle game

I’ve just published a new paper Teaching students how to spot climate misinformation using a cartoon game in the journal Plus Lucis. The paper is a readable (not too technical) explanation of the scientific research that informed the design of the Cranky Uncle game. I delve into inoculation theory, logic-based inoculation, critical thinking and the FLICC taxonomy, the use of parallel arguments in the form of cartoons to debunk misinformation, and games as a way to deliver active inoculation.

Plus Lucis is an educational journal for science teachers in Germany and Austria – most of the articles in this journal will be in German (but mine is in English). The current issue is only available in print but the journal graciously let me upload the paper for anyone to access – enjoy!

Oh and for German and Austrian science teachers – rest assured, the German version of Cranky Uncle is just around the corner. The game’s content has already been translated into German (as well as Dutch and Spanish). We’re now in the process of updating the game to a multi-language version – as well as figuring out what to do about all those really long German words!

I’ve played the game, got the game to work in Chrome but not Firefox. I learned all the denial techniques but when it comes to taking quizzes sometimes I can’t see the question and have to guess.
